Hello families,
Welcome to August, the last month in Winter. Our Book Fair is in full swing presently in Room 2 and families are welcome to visit. It is open Thursday and Friday after school from 3.30 to 4pm. Remember you don't have to visit but you are welcome to. The school gets a small percentage of the book sales. Thank you Emma and Taryn for organising our Book Fair.
Last fortnight we had the Lions Club Public Speaking Competition at school. We are especially proud of the following students who chose to participate: Beau Treyvaud, Lorelei Withers, Liana Eerhard, Chloe Mynard, Miranda Upston and Fenn Towb. You all did a wonderful job and should be very proud of 'having a go' and saying YES to this opportunity. Congratulations go to Lorelei Withers who won the Gr 4/5 competition and Liana Eerhard who won the Gr 5/6 competition. Special congratulations goes to Liana who also won the next zone level of the competition.
Assemblies
We have assembly every Monday morning where we raise our national flags. We think this is especially important as we are a respectful and inclusive community. In addition, we have two Friday afternoon assemblies to showcase our learning. This term the Friday assemblies are: tomorrow Friday August 5th at 3pm Gr 1/2 presenting their learning and Friday September 9th at 3pm with Gr 2/3 presenting their learning. Families are very welcome to join us in the Mary MacKillop room.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop
Mary MacKillop Prayer
Loving and eternal Father, you are glorified in your saints.
To you all praise, glory and honour!
You inspired Mary of the Cross to live by faith in your Son, Jesus Christ,
and to share in the saving power of his Cross.
As we travel on our way to join Mary MacKillop in our true home with you,
we are asking her to pray with us for peace in our world.
Lord, hear our prayer.
We ask of you also to send your Holy Spirit into our hearts
to give us faith like her faith.
Help us to bear the cross as she did and to follow the example of her kindness.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
(Josephite prayer to Mary MacKillop)
On Monday August 8th our church celebrates Australia's first saint in St Mary MacKillop. We will be celebrating St Mary MacKillop in a liturgy in the church at 3pm. Everyone is welcome to join us. The Mini Vinnies team are running a PJ Day fundraisier on Monday for the Mary MacKillop Foundation. If you would like to participate in this activity you are encouraged to wear your PJs to school and to donate a gold coin to the Mary MacKillop Foundation. This money will be sent off to the foundation who are fundraising to support a mobile kinder in Fiji.
Enrolments for 2023
A reminder if you know any families who have a 4 year old kinder child, you might consider promoting our school to them. Current school families who have a 4 year old Kinder child, we ask that you enrol now for next year please.
Remember there are New Child Safe Standards in schools. Here is the second standard.
Child Safe Standard 2 – Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in
organisational leadership, governance and culture
In complying with Child Safe Standard 2, St Joseph’s
School ensures:
2.1 that we make a public commitment to child safety.
2.2 A child safe culture is championed and modelled at all levels of our school from the top down and bottom up.
2.3 Governance arrangements facilitate implementation of child safety and
wellbeing policy at all levels.
2.4 A Code of Conduct provides guidelines for staff and volunteers on expected
behavioural standards and responsibilities.
2.5 Risk management strategies focus on preventing, identifying and mitigating
risks to children and young people.
2.6 Staff and volunteers understand their obligations on information sharing
and recordkeeping.
Here at St Joseph’s School we endeavour to meet this Standard by:
# Displaying our Child Safe Policies
# Referring to our Child Safe Policies in our communication
#Having our Child Safety Champions work with the staff, students, parents and volunteers
# Asking all staff, members of our school community and volunteers to read, agree to and sign our school’s Code of Conduct
# Providing explicit Child Safety lessons for the students at St Joseph’s
# Implementing strategies that focus on preventing, identifying and mitigating risks related to child safety and wellbeing in both the physical
and online school environments.

Parent /Teacher / Student Interviews
In week 6 on Wednesday August 16th we are running our Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews. Please note that Gr 3 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews will be taking place the following Wednesday, that is 23rd August, this is to ensure that both class teachers will be present at the interviews. This is part of our reporting process. It is an opportunity for teachers and families to discuss the Semester 1 Report and to talk about how teachers can best meet your child/ren’s needs. Conversations are scheduled for 15 minutes. Families will be given the opportunity to chose to have the interviews either at school or via Google Meet. We ask you to book your Interview online through PAM, this function is available now on PAM. When accessing PAM please click on the link Parent Teacher Interviews and follow the prompts. Families who have regualr SAEP (Student Adjustment Evaluation Plan) or PSGs (Parent Support Group) Meetings will not need to book an interview time as they will have an opportunity to discuss their child/ren's reports in week 5.
National Assessment Program- ICT Literacy (NAP - ICTL) 2022
Our School has been selected for the NAP-ICT Literacy 2022 assessment.
The NAP-ICT Literacy assessment is overseen by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). The National Assessment Program is an ongoing program of assessments designed to measure
progress towards the goals outlined in the Mparntwe Declaration, 2019.
The NAP–ICT Literacy Main Study assessment measures and reports on the ability of students to use information and communication technology appropriately and safely to access, manage and evaluate information; develop new understandings; apply computational, design and systems thinking to create solutions; communicate and collaborate with others; and engage productively with emerging
and future technologies.
The NAP-ICTL assessment is an online test – students will access it using internet-connected devices.
A sample of students from Year 6 will undertake the assessment. These students
will be randomly selected by ACER. The assessment session will last approximately two hours.
The assessment will be conducted in week 2 of Term 4.
This year we are running our swimming program in the last week of Term 3 at the Warragul Leisure Centre. It starts on Monday September 12th and finishes on Friday September 16th. We will go swimming in the afternoons on Monday through to Thursday and on Friday (the last day of term) we will go swimming in the morning (as school finishes at 1pm on the last day). Permission forms have been set up on PAM. Your child is encouraged to either wear their bathers to school under their uniform or bring their bathers (this is a good option if your child has a one piece suit) in a smaller bag to take swimming. We are looking for parent helpers, especially in the junior classes. All helpers must have a current Working with Children's Check.
Please see attached timetable. If you are able to help please let your classroom teacher know.
This is a great read. This month PARENTZONE highlight 6 pods that identify and explore common issues parents bring to parenting groups, and offer strategies to try in these situations. Podcasts are available on Family Meetings, Dealing with Anxiety, Sibling Rivalry, Getting Children to Listen, How to Respond to Kids' Behaviour and How to Stop Yelling at your Kids. Please see information in the newsletter.
Children's Book Council of Australia celebrate Book Week each year. This year it is Monday 22nd August to Friday 26th of August and Friday will be our Dress Up day for Book Week. The theme is Dreaming With Eyes Open. Students are encouraged to come dressed as a character from a book or perhaps something to do with the theme. We will have a parade at 9am and families are invited to attend. You might like to start thinking about costumes now.
NATIONAL CONSISTENT COLLECTION of DATA
Each year schools must complete the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). It counts the number of students who receive additional adjustments or “help” at school because of a disability. The NCCD helps governments plan for the needs of students with disability. Schools work together with families to understand the needs of each child. The government will use the NCCD data as part of the funding to schools. The government will not be given the names of any students or any letters or records to maintain the privacy of each student. If you have further questions about the NCCD please refer to the national NCCD Portal.
Our Mini Vinnies team are organising this year's TALENT SHOW. It will be on Tuesday August 23rd at 2pm in the Mary MacKillop room. All students are encouraged to prepare and enter the Talent Show. Sabrina has put the item list together and we look forward to the show. This is a fundraising event and it costs $2 for each student to enter the Talent Show. Sabrina is collecting this money, if your child is entered in the Talent Show could you give your child the $2 entry fee and ask them to give it to Sabrina please. If families come to watch the Talent Show the entry fee is $5 per family. If students would like to watch the Talent Show they will need to bring $2 to pay for entry.
