VICTORIAN CHILD SAFE STANDARDS
DOSCEL and St Joseph’s Primary School Trafalgar are committed to complying with the Victorian Child Safe Standards.
Prevention and Response
Preventing and responding to child abuse requires a whole community response to bring about cultural change. The Victorian Child Safe Standards apply to a broad range of organisations that provide services for children, including schools, churches, sporting clubs and youth services. Ensuring we have child safe communities goes to the heart of our faith and core purpose. Therefore, we are dedicated to upholding the values and practices that create safe learning environments for students.

Child Safety Champions
St Joseph’s Primary School has appointed Child Safety Champions. Each Child Safety Champion is available to answer any questions that you may have with respect to our Child Protection and Safety Policy and the Child Protection Program.
Child Safety Champions are selected based on a number of considerations, namely:
- their personal attitudes, experiences and beliefs, for example, a person who is non-judgmental, calm, resilient and demonstrates a high degree of integrity and respect for confidentiality;
- their role within the school, for example, a person who has seniority and experience working with complex student and family issues at the school and someone who is readily accessible and available to all members of the school community; and
- their personal profile within the school, for example, a person who is approachable, who students and staff trust and who is willing and able to respond to issues personally and sensitively.
It is every individual’s responsibility to protect children and make reports regarding their concerns to the appropriate authorities.
If a person requires support in reporting to the authorities, the school’s Child Safety Champions are your first point of contact. They receive special training that allows them to deal with child protection concerns both sensitively and effectively.

NATIONAL CONSISTENT COLLECTION of DATA
Each year schools must complete the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). It counts the number of students who receive additional adjustments or “help” at school because of a disability. The NCCD helps governments plan for the needs of students with disability. Schools work together with families to understand the needs of each child. The government will use the NCCD data as part of the funding to schools. The government will not be given the names of any students or any letters or records to maintain the privacy of each student. If you have further questions about the NCCD please refer to the national NCCD Portal.
PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT INTERVIEWS
In week 6 week we are running our Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews. This is part of our reporting process. It is an opportunity for teachers and families to discuss the Semester 1 Report and how teachers can best meet your child/ren’s needs. Conversations are scheduled for 10 minutes. If you would like the opportunity to book a double appointment please call Lucy in the office. Families will be given the opportunity to chose to have the interviews either at school or via Google Meet. We ask you to book your Interview online through PAM. When accessing PAM please click on the link Parent Teacher Interviews and follow the prompts. Families who have regualr SAEP Meetings will not need to book an interview time as they will have an opportunity to discuss their child/ren's reports in week 5.
SUMMARY OF SCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING
Our Annual Report to the School Community was highlighted and discussed. This report is available on our school website www.trafalgar.catholic.edu.au. Everyone is encouraged to read it. The Committee discussed the new Child Safety Standards and ideas for promotion of the school were also explored. The P&F report was delivered and the committee had time to discuss the impact of COVID on our school and community. Encouraging families to participate in school events was highlighted by the committee. Our current camp program and plans for our Discovery Expo in Term 4 we discussed. Our next meeting is Tuesday August 23rd, where we will discuss the findings of the SRC survey.
We have a very positive and active team of student leaders who work hard in our school as Mini Vinnies. The Mini Vinnies team are promoting and supporting the Mary MacKillop Foundation in running a PJ Day at our school on Monday August 8th. We are asking for a gold coin donation to support the Josephite Nun’s work in the Mary Mackillop Foundation. Later in the day we will celebrate the Feast day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, all are welcome to join our liturgy at 3pm in the church. Mary MacKillop is Australia’s first saint.
LIONS PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
Some students in Gr 3 & 4 and Gr 5 & 6 have prepared a speech for the Lions Public Speaking Competition. The topic for Gr 3/4 is 'A place other than in your home state, that you would like to visit'. The topic for Gr 5/6 is 'Introduce a Famous Person who lived in the 19th Century'. The students have been supported by school staff and families to prepare for this competition. Our school's final is Friday July 22nd at 11.30am in Room 2. All families are welcome to support these students. We wish them all the best.
As a Catholic school that uses Japanese, we say the Sign of the Cross using Japanese.
Have you ever considered the meaning of “In the name of” when saying the sign of the cross in English? I hadn’t. I have enjoyed contemplating it, and sharing ideas with students in grade 2/3, 4/5 and 5/6 today. They have a lot of beautiful ideas.
One of the joys of learning another language is the new perspectives that come with it. Japanese uses a phrase ‘ni yotte’, which attributes someone or something as being responsible for what happens. A simple example would be, Jamieson family ni yotte our school is beautifully decorated for the disco.
In the prayer, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are responsible for….everything.
In grades F/1 and 1/2 we also found each Japanese word and said them. Here is a link to the F1 video, the 12 video and a sample of our writing.

The special party pie and sausage roll lunch day which was planned for today will be postponed to Thursdy 28th July. Orders can be made on CDF Pay.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 3rd August at 9:15am. All are welcome!
Children's Book Council of Australia celebrate Book Week each year. This year it is Monday 22nd August to Friday 26th of August and Friday will be our Dress Up day for Book Week. The theme is Dreaming With Eyes Open. Students are encouraged to come dressed as a character from a book or perhaps something to do with the theme. We will have a parade at 9am and families are invited to attend. You might like to start thinking about costumes now.
This year we are running our swimming program in the last week of Term 3 at the Warragul Leisure Centre. It starts on Monday September 12th and finishes on Friday September 16th. We will go swimming in the afternoons on Monday through to Thursday and on Friday (the last day of term) we will go swimming in the morning (as school finishes at 1pm on the last day). Permission forms have been set up on PAM. Your child is encouraged to either wear their bathers to school under their uniform or bring their bathers (this is a good option if your child has a one piece suit) in a smaller bag to take swimming. We are looking for parent helpers, especially in the junior classes. All helpers must have a current Working with Children's Check.
Please see attached timetable. If you are able to help please let your classroom teacher know.
At St Joseph's we have a wonderful camp program which gradually introduces the students to a camp experience.
Earlier this year Grade 5 & 6 attended Sovereign Hill camp in Ballarat and next year they will participate in Urban Camp in Melbourne.
This year our Grade 3 & 4 students will attend Allambee Camp for 2 nights in week 10 of Term 4. This will be a free camp for all Grade 3 & 4 students due to the Department of Education initiative- Positive Start which is providing free school camps to eligible Victorian schools. The Positive Start in 2022 initiative is intended to provide additional camps and programs for students in 2022. It does not apply to existing camp and program bookings schools already have in place. All Grade 3 & 4 students camp levy will be reimbursed over the coming weeks.
Our Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2 camp experience includes staying after school, changing into casual clothes and participating in team building activities. Foundation students will be picked up at 5pm. Grade 1 students will walk to McGregor park for a play, BBQ dinner and be picked up at 6pm. Grade 2 students will have pizza and movie night at school and be picked up at 7pm. All of the Junior camps will be in Term 4, dates to come out later this term.
Is there anyone out there who would be interested in running our Garden Club? In the past we have run our Garden Club at lunchtime and the students have really enjoyed it. If you are interested you could do it whichever day it suited you, we are flexible. It involves weeding the garden and planting and attending to the plants. If you are interested you need to have a Working With Children Check.
Our Mini Vinnies team are organising this year's TALENT SHOW. It will be on Tuesday August 23rd at 2pm in the Mary MacKillop room. All students are encouraged to prepare and enter the Talent Show. Sabrina has put the item list together and we look forward to the show. This is a fundraising event and it costs $2 for each student to enter the Talent Show. Sabrina is collecting this money, if your child is entered in the Talent Show could you give your child the $2 entry fee and ask them to give it to Sabrina please. If families come to watch the Talent Show the entry fee is $5 per family. If students would like to watch the Talent Show they will need to bring $2 to pay for entry.
