Lent Prayer
Loving God, as we continue this season of Lent
We pray that over these 40 days, we will open
our minds and hearts to recognise and
respond to the needs of others.
Help us to be kind to those around us,
especially friends and family.
Through prayer, fasting and giving to those in need,
may we be ready to enter more fully
into the days of Holy Week. Amen
Each year we present the Easter Story to our community and it is particularly thoughtful and moving. We are hoping to really promote it this year as it is the story of our faith. It will be presented on Friday April 8th in our church at midday. We hope you are able to join us. After this we will come back to the Mary MacKillop Room and draw our Easter Raffle.

It is really important that students are at school on school days. It is important to organise family holidays in school holiday time as we know how crucial it is for children to be at school. In navigating these post COVID times we certainly understand that absence to do with COVID is necessary. With this in mind, it is even more critical that students are present at school if they can be. Parents please understand that if you have more than one child at school, if one child is sick it is still really important that the other child comes to school. If your child is not able to come to school then we ask that you go on to PAM and let the school know that your child will not be at school. Please also give a reason why your child is absent eg sick, doctor's appointment. For child safety reasons we need to know where your child is, so you are required to notify the school of your child's attendance. If we cannot contact you then our normal attendance procedure is followed where we will contact your emergency contacts.
All school children should be at school if they are well. Parents, please prioritize school attendance.
Our small working party have been working to implement our Marketing Plan for the school. Cat and I have started visiting the Traf Kinder to run short music and dancing sessions with the kinder students. It is lots of fun. Sabrina Shaw and I have been running ‘Storytime’ on a Friday morning, if you know any families with a 4 year old or maybe a 3 year old, please tell them about this service. The families who come have been enjoying it.
We have 3 parents who have volunteered to write a testimony promoting our school. We are wondering if there are any other parents who might like to do this. We would like to put these testimonies on Facebook to help promote our school. If you would like to be a part of this project then please email either Cat (cryan@trafalgar.catholic.edu.au) or myself (pmulqueen@trafalgar.catholic.edu.au) and we will be in contact with you. Foundation parents are also welcome to be part of this project.
Recently Joan, Olivia, Zara, Eleanor, Aleyah and Amelia came to me to talk about keeping our toilets clean. They came up with a set of rules that they would like to communicate to everyone so I said I would put them in the newsletter. They will also read these rules out at an assembly.
- (Joan) Remember toilets are not eating places.
- (Olivia) Do not lock the door and then go under it.
- (Zara) Don’t go in the toilet for nothing.
- (Eleanor) Remember to flush only once but if you need to flush twice you can.
- (Aleyah) Tell the teacher if there is a problem in the toilet.
- (Amelia) Don’t put full toilet rolls in the toilet.
- (everyone) DO NOT PUT TOILET PAPER ON THE FLOOR.

Our Parents & Friends group work really hard for our school. On Monday night we had our AGM. We acknowledged and thanked Lauren Francis for her work as President over the last 8 years and welcomed in our new President, Narelle Jamieson. We thanked Gen Fotis for her work as secretary and welcomed Emma Steendam and Laura Castello working together as co-secretary. Bec Harrison will continue as Treasurer and Andrew Jamieson will also be on the Committee. We are still looking for someone to replace Kylee Eerhard in the uniform shop, so if you are interested in helping we would love to hear from you.
The P&F provided a special lunch for us yesterday and they have organised a wonderful Easter raffle. Thank you to the families who have donated eggs for the raffle. The raffle will be drawn on the last day of term 1 Friday April 8th after the Easter Story Presentation which starts at midday.
The P&F will also run a Hot Cross Bun day on Thursday 7th April ($1 for a bun).
School Garden
In previous years we have run a Garden Club Program at school. We are grateful to the parents who have been able to help with this program. Presently we are looking for someone to help in our school garden. Grandparents too are welcome. As we are still under COVID regulations from DOSCEL if you are interested in helping, remember you need to be fully vaccinated and have a current Working With Children Check.
Please see attached a collage of how the P&F have supported the school in 2021.
Interschool Athletics Carnival
Twenty two students in Gr 3, 4, 5 & 6 are representing our school at District Athletics tomorrow at the Geoff Watt Track in Warragul. This is a whole day activity and Will, Emma and Jen will be attending with the students. Special thanks to Joe Plozza for supervising the long jump activity on our behalf. Parents are welcome to attend. We wish our team all the best in their participation. Go St Joe’s!
Settlement Road After School Care Program
Last year we sent out a short survey to see if parents were interested in an after school care program and a number of parents expressed interest. We have been looking into this for our school. As our numbers are not especially big and also due to COVID shortages in staff, at this time it simply is not viable for us to run an afterschool care program here. We do however have a particularly good Daycare Centre just around the corner from us, Settlement Road DayCare, that run a great program. I have spoken with Jessica the director, and she is happy to welcome our interest. After school care is available at Settlement Road Daycare from 6.30am to 6.30pm. There is a bus available to transport children from the centre to our school and vice versa. They welcome permanent and casual bookings. A 50% government subsidy is available for all families. Please contact Jessica if you are interested.
The School Advisory Committee operates to support the overall running of the school by reviewing policies and procedures. This committee considers the big picture of school operations. Things like school uniform is considered at these meetings together with policy review.
This year we would like to thank out going members: Marja Jamieson & Ashley Treyvaud, who have worked on this committee for a number of years. We would like to formally thank Marja and Ashley at our next Friday assembly on March 15th.
Our 2024 School Advisory Committee members are: Taryn Maxwell-Garratt, Fr Bernard (our Parish Priest), Trish Mulqueen, Brett Hicks, Scott McCartin, Lauren Baldassa and we warmly welcome our new members: Kate Westbury and Megan Shiels. Our first meeting is Wed March 6th at 5pm at school. If you would like an idea discussed at this meeting, then please feel free to talk with one of our School Advisory Committee members and they will follow it up.
RRRR (Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships) Program
Our School promotes and explicitly teaches our Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support and in this we highlight our School Wide Expectations of Respect, Resilience, Inclusiveness and Teamwork. Continuing our work in this space, we are introducing and teaching the Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships (RRRR) Program put out by the Victorian Education Department. This program is about building a culture of respect and equality. It teaches children the social-emotional skills for mental health and to build healthy positive relationships, resilience and confidence. Efforts to promote social and emotional skills and positive gender norms in children and young people has been shown to improve health related outcomes and subjective wellbeing. It also reduces antisocial behaviours including engagement in gender-related violence. The eight topics of RRRR are: Emotional Literacy, Personal Strengths, Positive Coping, Problem Solving, Stress Management, Help-Seeking, Gender and Identity, and Positive Gender Relations. You will be hearing more about this program in the coming newsletters.
Please find attached a flyer of the Values for Australian Schools. Everything we do at school serves to build these values.
There is an Information Evening at Marist-Sion College 26 April 2022 4pm to 6.45pm. This is a great opportunity to find out more about our wonderful College. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
Grade 5 & 6 students stepped back into the 1850's earlier this term where they learnt about life on the Goldfields at Sovereign Hill. The program included diving into the Eureka Rebellion at the AURA show (previously ‘Blood on the Southern Cross’), experiencing how miners felt underground in the Red Hill Mine, trying their luck down by the creek where students panned for gold as well as learning how the infamous Sovereign Hill lollies are created. All teachers in attendance were really proud of the students with their enthusiasm and willingness to learn and try new things. It was such a fun and memorable experience for all.

We continue to be committed to our COVID safe measures at school. Our classrooms are well ventilated and air purifiers are in use in each classroom. Masks are still to be worn by teachers and students in Gr 3, 4, 5 & 6, unless there is an exemption. It is recommended that students in the younger classes also wear masks.
Staff and workers at our school need to be triple vaxed (and school needs to keep a registry of this) and visitors to our school need to be double vaxed (staff only need to sight this). Families are still being asked to RAT (rapid antigen test) test your child/ren twice a week and let the school know if your child is positive or if someone in your family is positive. If a person is positive they need to isolate for 7 days and if they are a close contact they still need to isolate for 7 days. In these cases, the school is supporting the student’s learning as best we can and at the same time running a fulltime classroom. There’s no doubt these are challenging times but as I often say, when parents and teachers work together, great things happen. Thank you for your continued support in this space.
