Lent is the church season before Easter and is a time of change to prepare our hearts for the most important church season of Easter. It is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving (doing good deeds). Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Yesterday Catholics and many other Christians had ashes applied to their foreheads in the shape of a cross. People generally wear the ashes, which symbolize penance throughout the day to publicly express their faith. The school leaders (Kaitlyn, Anton, Robert) and I went to Mass yesterday in our church and we received the ashes to bring back to the school so that the teachers could distribute the ashes to the students. The church color for LENT is purple and so our sacred space in the Mary MacKillop room is now purple.
Each year our Gr 5/6 class dramatizes the Easter Story and every year it is particularly well done and very thoughtful and moving. We are hoping to really promote it this year as it is the story of our faith. It will be presented on Friday April 8th in our church at midday. We hope you are able to join us. After this we will come back to the Mary MacKillop Room and draw our Easter Raffle.
We have a very active Parents & Friends group who work especially hard for our school. Our first meeting is next week on Wednesday March 9th at 9.15am in the staff room at school. We would like to very warmly invite everyone to this meeting. We will have coffee and cake together. It is a great way to meet new people and a positive way to be involved in our school community. We look forward to seeing you there.

The government supports Physical Education in schools through the Sporting Schools Program. Through this program we are able to supply an expert athletics coach to teach the students over four different visits. Our athletics program will culminate with our school’s athletics carnival at the Joe Carmody Track in Newborough on Tuesday March 15th. We really need lots of parent helpers to run this day successfully so if you are able to help please contact Taryn.
We have started Breakfast Club at school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 8.15am. At the moment it is operating in the Staffroom at school, we hope to move it to the Parish Centre soon. Students cannot arrive at school earlier than 8.15am. At this stage there will be no charge for breakfast, we are hoping to get some sponsorship and donations. We have a list of parents who are interested in helping to staff this club and if you would like to be added to the list or if you would like to include your child in this program, then please email either Cathleen Ryan cryan@trafalgar.catholic.edu.au or myself. pmulqueen@trafalgar.catholic.edu.au
We use technology in our school as a tool to facilitate learning. We teach students to look after the devices and to use them correctly. At the beginning of each school year we revisit our School’s ICT (Information, Communication, Technology) Agreement to help the students to understand this. Teachers unpack the agreement at the level of the students and help the students to see how important it is to be safe on our devices. For your information, I have attached a copy of our Junior ICT Agreement and a copy of our Senior Grades ICT Agreement. You might like to refer to the Agreement in your safe use of technology at home.
Our Parent Code of Conduct is part of positive school practice. Please find a copy attached to this newsletter. We ask that you read it and when you’re next in school, that you sign the registry at the front office to say that you have read it and will follow it. It states very clearly in this code of conduct that school issues are dealt with through the school and not between parents. Please remember parents that if /when an incident happens at school, it is the school’s responsibility (that is, the principal or the teacher’s responsibility) to follow this up and to then communicate information, where necessary, to other parents. You are not allowed to approach another parent about something that happened at school. This is the school’s job.
We have put together a small working party (Trish, Cat and marketing rep from the Catholic Education Office) to implement our Marketing Plan for the school. Presently we have started visiting the Traf Kinder to run short music and dancing sessions with the kinder students. It is lots of fun. We have 3 parents who have volunteered to write a testimony promoting our school. We are wondering if there are any other parents who might like to do this. We would like to put these testimonies on Facebook to help promote our school. If you would like to be a part of this project then please email either Cat (cryan@trafalgar.catholic.edu.au) or myself (pmulqueen@trafalgar.catholic.edu.au) and we will be in contact with you. Foundation parents are also welcome to be part of this project.
We are also running 'Storytime' for 4 and 3 year olds at school on a Friday morning at 9.15am in Term 1 & Term 2.
Icy poles on sale on Fridays in term 1 $1
Remember school hats must be worn in Term 1 & Term 4.
The St Vincent de Paul Society aspires to live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society. Our Mini Vinnies team at school work as part of the Parish's St Vincent de Paul group. We work as a caring Catholic charity offering 'a hand up' to people in need. This year twenty students in Gr 5 & 6 have volunteered to work as part of our Mini Vinnies team. We will work in smaller groups to plan and implement fundraising activities for our school. We congratulate and acknowledge our Mini Vinnies Team for 2022:

Respectful Relationships Program
Last week, Mrs Mulqueen, Miss Ryan and Mrs Balfour completed an induction about the Respectful Relationships program. It connects very well with our already positive Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support (WSAPBS). Both programs support schools to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours.
Respectful Relationships support students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to strengthen their sense of self, and build and manage safe and respectful relationships.
Respectful Relationships takes a whole-school approach, much like WSAPBS, recognising that schools are a place of learning, a workplace and a key part of local communities. It embeds a culture of respect and equality across our entire school community, from our classrooms to staffrooms, sporting fields and social events.
This approach leads to positive change in students’ academic outcomes, their wellbeing, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and gender equality are lived across the school community.
Together, we can lead the way in creating genuine and lasting change so every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence
On Friday 18 March 2022 , St Joseph’s School will once again participate in the
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). We are all invited to
wear orange to school to show our support for this very important day. This is
Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative, and will be celebrating 12 years of
action, connecting schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent
bullying.
The theme for 2022 is Kindness Culture. By building Kindness Culture together, we
can promote inclusion, respect and community belonging for all students in schools
across Australia.
日本語
Nihongo
Japanese
Want to [verb]
[verb] tai
走りたい
Speaking Japanese means speaking Japanese. Each term I think about what children say, and make that the lesson focus. Children frequently tell us what they want to do. In Japanese the ‘want’ part of the word is after the verb. So ‘want to run’ in Japanese is ‘hashiritai’. ‘Hashiri’ is ‘run’ and ‘tai’ is ‘want to’. Here is a link to the books I made about ‘want to’.
Here is a link to the video of our hot potaito game. The person with the ball (the hot potaito) gets to say what they want to do, and if it is reasonable, they actually do it. This has been especially popular when students say ‘snack o tabetai’ because they are then allowed to actually get their snack and eat it during the game.
